I left before 1987

Unfortunately if you left before 1987 you are unable to make a claim for compensation, this is due to Crown Immunity, the laws were changed in 1987 to make employers liable for health and safety in the workplace which included the Armed Forces, for people who were in the armed forces before this date you might still be eligible for assistance, send us an email to [email protected] and we will do our best to help.

Understanding the risks you faced

The Armed Forces environment exposes personnel to extreme noise levels, increasing the likelihood of long-term hearing issues. Here are some of the most common causes of hearing damage in the military:

  • Explosions - Sudden, powerful blasts that create extreme sound waves.
  • Gunfire and mortars - Persistent gunfire and the discharge of mortars generate intense sound that wears down hearing over time.
  • Vehicle noise - Extended exposure to loud, heavy machinery and vehicle engines.
  • Aircraft noise - Frequent exposure to roaring jet engines and helicopters.
  • Brass bands - Regular participation in or exposure to brass bands can also contribute to hearing loss.
  • Bombs and pyrotechnics - Explosive devices can permanently impact hearing, even at a distance.

If you were subjected to these conditions during your service, you may have a right to seek compensation.

Not just a part of the job

Hearing loss should not be accepted as "just part of the job." The Ministry of Defence, like any employer, has a duty of care to minimise workplace risks. If you believe this duty was compromised, you could have a legal right to compensation.

Armedforces-Hearing-Help exists to ensure that our service members do not suffer silently. We’re here to help you determine if your hearing loss is linked to service and guide you toward the support you deserve.
